IWU women shuts out Florida team

No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis made quick work of No. 21 St. Thomas (Fla.) in a 5-0 victory Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Wildcats swept doubles and then Lizzie Bauss and Thewuni Devaraja completed quick singles wins for the team win.

The win improved the Wildcats' overall record for the fall and spring to 21-0. St. Thomas dropped to 4-6. 


In doubles, No. 1 Alex Mella and Lizzie Bauss won 8-0; No. 2 Olivia Reed and Thewuni Devaraja won 8-2, and No. 3 Marissa Klein and Laura Moore won 8-6.

Bauss won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Devaraja won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the match.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Southeastern (Fla.) and against Warner (Fla.) on Thursday.

Men's tennis

Indiana Wesleyan 5, St. Thomas (Fla.) 4

No. 25 Indiana Wesleyan University improved to 4-2 vs. NAIA Top-25 teams this spring following a tight victory at No. 22 St. Thomas (Fla.) on Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Wildcats captured wins in four of the six singles matches.

IWU moved to 20-2 while St. Thomas dropped to 5-5.


Doubles winners for the Wildcats was No. 3 Joel Montgomery and Austin Christner 8-4.


No. 1 singles Eli Steiner won in thre sets 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 while No. 4 Jacob Rankin (6-4, 6-3), No. 5 Christner (6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 Tyler Abbott (6-3, 6-0) won in straight sets.

IWU faced Southeastern (Fla.) and Warner (Fla.) on Thursday.


Middle school wrestling

McCulloch wins pair

McCulloch defeated Alexandria 66-54 and R.J. Baskett 48-38 in a double-dual meet Wednesday.

Against Alexandria, McCulloch winners were Aaron Isaacs, Conner Kissell, David Cannon, Nic Elliott, Marques Smith, Makayla Starr, Beck Vermilion, Julian Gilbert, Tyler Gargus, Thomas Brown, Deonte Reed and Marcus Bounds.

McCulloch winners against R.J. Baskett were Kissell, Cannon, Elliott, Smith, Aden Fisher, Reed and Bounds.
